Captions vs Subtitles: What Creators Need to Know

What captions usually mean
Captions turn the audio into timed text. They can include spoken words and, in stricter accessibility workflows, meaningful audio cues. For social video, creators often use the word captions for visible text that helps viewers follow speech when the sound is off.
What subtitles usually mean
Subtitles are usually about language. They translate or transcribe spoken dialogue so someone can follow a video in another language or with a text track. A subtitle file can still look like a caption file because both use timed text.
Open captions and closed captions
Open captions are part of the video image. Viewers cannot turn them off. Closed captions live as a separate track, so the viewer or platform can show or hide them. Social teams often use open styled captions for short clips and keep SRT or VTT files for channels that accept separate tracks.
