When an SRT file is the right export
SRT is a simple subtitle format that many video editors, social platforms, review tools, and clients can read. If a destination asks for a .srt file and you only have WebVTT, convert the VTT file before uploading it.
WebVTT is not the only format that has to become SRT. If what you have is a styled ASS or SSA file, or the .sbv file YouTube Studio downloads, those convert to SRT here too. The ASS conversion is the one that loses something, because SRT has no way to carry styling.
One WebVTT feature does survive, in translated form. A speaker voice span becomes the "Name:" prefix that SRT files conventionally use, rather than being passed through as raw markup for the viewer to read.
The important difference is syntax. WebVTT starts with a WEBVTT header, uses period-based timestamp milliseconds, and can include cue settings for position or styling. SRT uses numbered cue blocks and comma-based milliseconds, so unsupported VTT metadata has to be removed.
