Why cropping the middle of the frame is not enough.
A 9:16 crop from a 16:9 frame keeps about a third of the width. If the person leans, walks or sits off-centre, a fixed centre crop cuts them in half. That is why a static crop in CapCut or Premiere so often needs keyframing by hand.
AutoCaption builds a mask of the person, frame by frame, in your browser. The crop aims at the upper body, eases over about a second so it does not twitch, ignores small movements, and cuts straight to the new position when the person jumps more than a quarter of the frame, the way an editor would cut rather than pan.
Captions are the other half. Captions written for a wide frame run too long for a tall one, so reframing and captioning in one place means you can re-break lines and move the caption block after you see the new crop, not before.
What it does, and what it does not
Three shapes
Vertical 9:16 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, portrait 4:5 for the feed, and square 1:1. If the video is already that shape, the editor says so and changes nothing.
You approve every reframe
The crop is a proposal. Nothing is applied until you accept it, and you can reject it and keep the original framing.
No upscaling
The export crops from your source pixels and never enlarges them. A 1080p landscape video gives a sharp vertical crop at up to 1080p on the paid plans.
One person at a time
It follows the person it finds in frame. It does not listen for who is talking, so on a two-person podcast it will not switch between guests. For that, cut the clip to one speaker first.

Horizontal to vertical questions
How do I convert a horizontal video to vertical without cutting people out?
Use a crop that follows the person instead of a fixed centre crop. In AutoCaption, upload the video, open Review, click Find the speaker, then Propose reframe and choose 9:16. Check the proposal and accept it before export.
Is auto reframe free?
Reframing in the editor is free. Exporting the video uses export minutes: the free plan includes 5 a month at 720p with a watermark, and paid plans export at 1080p or up to 4K with no watermark.
What aspect ratios can I reframe to?
Vertical 9:16, portrait 4:5 and square 1:1. Those cover TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and the Instagram and LinkedIn feeds.
Does the crop follow whoever is speaking?
It follows the person it detects in frame, not the voice. With one person on screen that is the speaker. With two people side by side it will not switch between them, so cut the clip to one speaker first.
Will the vertical video look blurry?
Not from upscaling, because the export never enlarges your pixels. A vertical crop does use less of the frame, so start from the highest resolution source you have.
Do I still need captions on a vertical video?
Most short-form video is watched with the sound off at first, so yes. AutoCaption generates them in the same edit, and you can re-break lines and move them once you see the new frame.
