Caption Line Breaks for Reels, TikTok, and Shorts

A character limit tells you that a caption line has to split. It does not tell you where to split it. That second question is the one that decides whether a viewer reads the caption once or reads it twice, and it has a better answer than breaking wherever the line happens to run out of room.

Both halves have to fit

The most common mistake is breaking so the first line looks right, then leaving whatever remains on the second. If that remainder is still over the limit, the player wraps it again, and a caption you designed as two lines reaches the viewer as three. A break point is only usable when both sides of it come in under the limit. Check the second line, not just the first.

Rank the break points instead of hunting for the middle

Once you know which break points are legal, they are still not equal. A useful order, and the one our line breaker scores against, is:

1. After a sentence that ends in a full stop, question mark, or exclamation mark.
2. After a clause that ends in a comma, semicolon, or colon.
3. Before a joining word such as and, but, because, which, when, to, of, in, with, or the.
4. Whichever legal break leaves the two lines closest in length.

Balance sits last on purpose. It is the tiebreak between equally good break points, not the goal. A real line shows why:

Add the garlic now.

Nineteen characters against thirty-two is not an even split, and a breaker chasing symmetry would have cut somewhere around the word fast, in the middle of a clause. The sentence boundary is worth more than the tidier shape, because the viewer is already pausing there.

Sentences with no punctuation to break on

Plenty of spoken lines arrive with no full stop and no comma anywhere in them. That is what the joining words are for. They mark the start of a phrase, so breaking just before one keeps the phrase whole:

broken at 42 characters becomes:

This is the part everyone asks about
in the comments every single time.

The break lands before in, which opens the closing phrase. Nothing in the line was punctuated, and the result still reads as two units rather than one sentence chopped in half.

When no break point works at all

Two lines at a 32 character limit hold 64 characters of text between them. If the caption runs longer than that, no placement rescues it. Both example sentences above fail at 32 for exactly this reason: one is 75 characters, the other 71, and every possible split leaves one side over the limit.

A tool that reports failure here is telling you the truth, and the fix is upstream of line breaking. Split the cue in time so the words arrive as two captions, or shorten the wording. There is a second version of the same ceiling: because breaks land between words, a single word longer than the limit can never be wrapped, which is worth remembering for long hashtags, URLs, and compound product names.

Vertical video leaves less room than 42

The familiar broadcast figure is 42 characters per line, and it assumes a wide frame. Reels, TikTok, and Shorts are narrower, and the safe area is narrower again once platform controls and the caption overlay are on screen. We use 32 for short-form vertical, which is why a caption that wrapped cleanly for a landscape export can need re-breaking for a phone.
